Gardening with Kids

Gardening for preschoolers involves simple, sensory-rich activities like planting easy-to-grow seeds (beans, carrots, radishes) in pots or a small patch, using child-sized tools, and exploring textures, smells, and colors with all senses. Key activities include watering, observing growth in seed jars, making garden crafts (suncatchers, painted pots), creating bug hotels, and learning about composting to develop motor skills, responsibility, and scientific curiosity in a fun, hands-on way.

Getting Started

  • Keep it Simple:

Start with a small plot or containers and easy plants like lettuce, radishes, sunflowers, or herbs.

  • Child-Sized Tools:

Provide kid-friendly trowels, watering cans, and gloves to build confidence and motor skills.

  • Engage All Senses:

Encourage touching (with a "please touch" sign), smelling, listening, and tasting edible plants.

Fun Activities

  • Planting: Let them choose seeds (beans, carrots, strawberries are great), cover them with soil, and water them.

  • Observation: Use seed jars or baggies to watch germination, draw in a garden journal, or measure plant growth.

  • Creatures: Look for worms and insects with magnifying glasses and learn about their role in the garden.

  • Crafts: Make leaf rubbings, painted pots, garden suncatchers, or DIY bird feeders.

  • Literacy & Math: Sing garden songs, count flowers, match colors, or bury letters/pictures for matching games.

  • Composting: Turn food scraps into compost to learn about recycling and worms.

Benefits

  • Sensory & Motor Skills: Develops fine motor control (digging, watering) and sensory awareness (smells, textures).

  • Cognitive Growth: Teaches life cycles, responsibility, math, and science concepts.

  • Emotional Well-being: Reduces stress and fosters a sense of ownership and accomplishment.
